2009 The Players Championship!

May 7-10, 2009
at TPC Sawgrass · Ponte Vedra Beach, FL.

The Championship has being played at many different places since it was inaugurated. The inaugural event in 1974 was played at Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia before moving to Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas in 1975 and Inverrary Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1976. Beginning in 1977, the event relocated to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, first being played at Sawgrass Country Club's Oceanside Course (a combination of the "East" and "West" 9-hole courses). Since 1982 it has been played across the road from Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

The Players Championship can be distinguished from the "Majors" in that it is owned and administered by the PGA Tour. In contrast, The Masters is owned by the Augusta National Golf Club, the U.S. Open by the USGA, the British Open by the R&A, and the PGA Championship by the PGA of America.

The championship this time is 7220 yards in total long and a Purse of $9.5 million in shares for the prizes with a winner prize of $1.71 million. Probably is one of the most well paid championships during the year and hence one of the most attractive to get into in order of the money prize and the name of the event.

The field usually includes the top fifty golfers in the world rankings, but unlike the three majors which are staged in the U.S., it does not count as an official event on the European Tour. The winner of The Players Championship also receives a 5 year exemption on the PGA Tour, a 3 year invitation to The Masters, a 3 year exemption for the British Open, and an exemption to the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship for that year which is a good package of awards in my opinion.

PGA Tour The Players Championship Results

The Players Championship, which ended last May 10th, 2009, came up with its winner Henrik Stenson, a 33 year old player from Gothenburg, Sweden who has another two victories in PGA tours. His score was 68-69-73-66 for a total of 276 points. He was followed by Ian Poulter with a score of 67-68-75-70 for a total of 280 points and followed by John Mallinger with a score of 66-71-74-70 for a total of 281 points. It’s astonishing that Vijay Singh didn’t win this tournament even when he was proposed to be the favorite one to get the victory. At the end he got a -4 to par ending in a T9 position with Aaron Baddeley.
