	Now regarded as one of the world's great sporting events, the Ryder Cup has accounted more than 80 years and 34 competitions and was originally intended to be a competition between the best American and British professionals.
After two unofficial matches, Samuel Ryder was persuaded by George Duncan and golf professional Abe Mitchell to provide a trophy as a focus for more regular matches. Back there is where this championship started.

The Ryder Cup is a golf match contested biennially between USA and Europe and was first staged in 1927. It is now considered to be the third biggest sporting event in the world. In 2006 the Cup was played at the K Club in Ireland and in 2008 it will be taken to Valhalla Golf Club, Louisville, Kentucky before it's Wales' turn to shine in the spotlight!

Each team has 12 players that represent the very best from Europe and America. They are led by non-playing Team Captains - in 2006 the European Captain was Ian Woosnam. The match format has changed many times, but since 1979 it has comprised of four fourball and four foursomes during days one and two, with twelve singles matches on the final, third day.
