US Masters History

The first US Masters was played on the 22nd of March 1934. Originally an invitational event, the US Masters was initially known as the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, because course designer Bob Jones believed that the use of the term "Masters" sounded 'preposterous'. Jones eventually changed his mind and the tournament was re-named in 1939 as the US Masters.

The most famous period in the tournament's history was the 1960s and 1970s when the legendary trio of Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player dominated the US Masters. Nicklaus won the US Masters 5 times during this period, while Arnold Palmer and Gary Player won 3 titles apiece. Many golf fans associate Gary Player's career with the US Masters, as he was the first non-American to win the tournament.
