About the Tournament

The 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup is a golf tournament which will take place from November 24 to November 27 at Mission Hills Haikou in Hainan, China. It will be the 56th World Cup, and the first since 2009, when the tournament switched to being staged biennially. 28 countries will compete as two player teams.

Qualification and format

The leading 18 available players from the Official World Golf Ranking on July 18 qualified. These 18 players then selected a player from their country to compete with them. The person they pick had to be ranked within the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking as of September 1. If there was no other player from that country within the top 100 then the next highest ranked player would be their partner. If there was no other available player from that country within the top 500, then the exempt player could choose whoever he wants as long as they are a professional from the same country. A further nine countries will qualify via three qualifying stages, held respectively in Malaysia, Estonia and South America. The final team will be the host nation, China.

The event is a 72-hole stroke play team event with each team consisting of two players. The first and third days are fourball play and the second and final days are foursomes play.

At 80sq km (1.5 times the size of Manhattan) and containing 22 golf courses[2] and luxury hotels,[3] it will be the second largest golf complex in the world.  The largest is the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen.  The complex has been under construction since 2006, but stopped for several months during 2008 because of land disputes.[5] It is due to open some time in 2011. The complex is expected to host the 2010 Mission Hills Star Trophy and 2011 Omega Mission Hills World Cup.
